A Johannesburg woman got the shock of her life when a routine password check led her to discover that someone had been driving around the city using a copy of her number plate.

Farzana Charmz, who runs the Instagram account @redline_motoring, shared the ordeal in a video posted on 9 September 2026. It started with a critical security alert from Google warning her of a possible data breach and urging her to update her passwords.

While working through her password manager, she landed on PayCity and remembered an SMS she had received some time back flagging that her account was blocked due to traffic infringements, which meant she could not renew her car licence. That licence happened to be due for renewal that same month.

The photo that changed everything

When she opened the infringement on PayCity and clicked on the attached image, she found a white VW Polo carrying her exact number plate. The problem? She does not own a VW Polo.

“I am internally freaking out,” Farzana said in the video, before heading to her nearest police station to report the matter and figure out her next steps. The clip resonated with South Africans who recognised the frustration of navigating bureaucratic and criminal headaches they had no hand in creating.
