A mother’s guidance on identity and purpose
The Briefly News team spoke with Queen Nandi following her daughter Liza’s matric farewell preparations in Johannesburg.
When asked how it felt seeing Liza dressed up and ready for her big night, Queen Nandi shared:
“Seeing Liza dressed up for her matric dance was one of those moments that reminds you how quickly children grow. One day you are carrying them in your arms, and the next you are watching them prepare to step into the world as young adults. As a mother, I was proud, but beyond the beauty, the dress and the occasion, I found myself reflecting on the young woman she is becoming.
I want Liza to understand that the world may not always crown her in the spaces where she desperately wants to be crowned. But she was born with something that no human being can give her and no human being should have the power to take away. My prayer is that she will never spend her life seeking validation, not even from me as her mother. I want her to know who she is, even in rooms that fail to recognise her.”
The team asked about what went into selecting the statement red gown and styling her overall look:
“We wanted a look that celebrated her personality and the significance of the occasion. The red gown made a beautiful statement, and seeing everything come together was special. But for me, the most important thing was that Liza felt beautiful, confident and comfortable in her own skin. A dress can make a statement for one evening, but I am raising a young woman who must understand that her worth extends far beyond what she wears, how she looks or how people respond to her appearance. The gown was for the occasion. The confidence, identity and sense of purpose are what I hope she carries long after the matric dance.”
When asked what special wish she holds for Liza as she finishes off her final school year, Queen Nandi expressed:
“My greatest wish is that Liza discovers and walks in the purpose for which God created her. Her name, Lizalise, carries a deeply personal meaning for me: Lizalis' idinga lakho, Thixo — fulfil Your purpose, God. When I gave her that name, I was acknowledging that I do not know everything God has placed inside my child. I can raise her, guide her, pray for her and give her the best foundation I can, but I cannot dictate the full extent of her purpose. Only her Creator knows it.
As she completes matric, I pray that she will have the courage to pursue her dreams, the wisdom to make good decisions and the strength to stand firm when the world does not understand her. I hope she never measures her life against somebody else's timeline or mistakes applause for purpose. Above everything, I want her to know that she does not have to become somebody else to be worthy of love, success or recognition. She must become herself fully. My daughter, the world may or may not give you the crowns you desire, but never forget that you do not have to wait for the world to crown you before you recognise what God has placed within you.”
