The Briefly News team caught up with the confident matriculant, who shared what motivated her unique outfit choice, how it felt to embrace her roots on her big night, and her advice for future graduates looking to make a statement.

We asked the matriculant what inspired her to wear cultural attire for her matric dance instead of a standard gown. She said:

“The reason I chose that attire is that my dad is a foreigner (Angolan), and the aim was to represent both my cultures. Our matric dance was going to be on Heritage Day, so I thought of something traditional; people even call me SOUTHGOLAN because I'm not shy nor ashamed of my other family over the border.”

The team asked how it felt stepping out on her big night in an outfit that proudly represented her heritage. The Grade 12 learner shared:

“I actually felt myself because I looked very unique and beautiful; I was literally the only one with such an outfit, and I stood out because the theme was Bridgerton, and I told myself, "I'm not a fairy nor Sophia the First, and I'm not going to a ball. I'm sure if they had to select the best dress, I would've won.”
