eTHEKWINI - The ANC deputy branch chairperson Cassim Phiri of ward 14 in eThekwini has been shot dead while leaving the party's caucus meeting.

TimesLive reported that this incident was the fifth killing of top-ranking ANC officials in eThekwini in the last few weeks.

Mlondi Mkhize, the ANC's regional spokesperson, issued a statement that Phiri was shot by unidentified gunmen at Mariannhill Primary school.

Mkhize implored Bheki Cele to prioritise an investigation into the murder of Phiri and other political-related murder cases that have taken place in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Mkhize also said:

“As the ANC in eThekwini, we reiterate our call for more resources to be allocated to ensure intelligence gathering to detect planned killings of leaders
“We are encouraging police to continue to use a sophisticated technology to conduct touch DNA and fingerprinting on firearms, dangerous weapons and other exhibits found in crime scenes.”

It was a sombre mood on social media when people heard of the latest ANC leader who lost his life due to gun violence in eThekwini. Below are some of the comments:

115 suspects arrested in eThekwini as multidisciplinary task forces cleans up streets of KwaZulu-Natal

Briefly News reported that in a bid to rid the eThekwini District of crime, a multidisciplinary task force arrested over 100 people in an operation held over the weekend.

The operation, which started on Friday and continued till Sunday evening, was undertaken by various law enforcement agencies and simultaneously conducted in Durban North, Point, Durban CBD, Umbilo, Greenwood Park and other areas in the eThekwini District, The Witness reported.
