JOHANNESBURG - Two suspects have been arrested by the Gauteng Police in connection with the Nomzamo tavern shooting that left 16 people dead in Soweto.

The massacre occurred when gunmen entered the tavern, opened fire, and randomly shot people at the establishment.

According to TimesLive, the police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said that one suspect was arrested on Thursday in Gauteng, and the other suspect was arrested on Friday in the Northern Cape.

“On September 22 (Thursday), national crime intelligence officers arrested one suspect who was then linked to the Nomzamo shooting incident in Johannesburg. The suspect was handed over to Gauteng’s murder and robbery investigating team for further handling. He then led the team to one of his accomplices who was arrested in Northern Cape on September 23 (Friday),” said Muridili.

It's reported that one of the suspects arrested is also being held in connection to two other murders that happened between October 2021 and May 2022.

South Africans reacted to the news about the latest arrests on social media. Read their comments below:

@syllabuhle posted:

"Make no mistake, in their own country you'll never commit a crime and get away with it. You will regret the day. They also know that."

@velile23 added:

"Lesotho has a top 5 murder rate per capita in the world. They get away with murder."

@green_terro commented:

"The interesting part is the "woke" are always quiet when stories like these pop up but the moment active citizens or the government want to stand up for the country, they write non-stop think pieces using fancy words. Kanti, what do they want?"

@PretoriaProudly asked:

"So this one remained in the country while others fled?"

@MaxwellJabu2kk said:

"Reading through this story, it appears that illegal mining is the cause of the Nomzamo massacre. However, the government and the police are turning a blind eye. Being reactionary won't stop the killings; a strategy should have been devised to curb illegal mining."

@EsterVeldman wrote:

"Glad to hear news like this. What is the reason for randomly shooting people you don’t know? This is flat-out terrorism?"

@ZoomProphetof tweeted:

"The curse of Africa is murder for recognition. May no murderer ever walk free."

@ISephara stated:

"It still baffles me that the ordinary community members of Soweto have better and more highly accurate crime intelligence than Bheki Cele. That imbecile stood proudly & said the killers are Zulu youth from KZN and that he was hot on their trail."
