WESTERN CAPE — A police captain investigating the murder of former Knysna mayor Aubrey Tsengwa has been shot and killed during a shootout with suspects.
The 50-year-old captain was killed during a law enforcement operation in the Sewende Laan informal settlement on 26 August 2026.
The officer, attached to the Western Cape Tactical Response Team, was part of an integrated unit executing a follow-up operation based on intelligence about illegal firearms at the settlement when the confrontation turned fatal. A 38-year-old suspect also died in the exchange.

Officers were probing Tsengwa's murder
The slain captain had been working on the case of Aubrey Tsengwa, a 48-year-old former Knysna mayor and African National Congress councillor, who was gunned down on 19 August 2026 while seated in his vehicle in the Joodsekamp area. Three other passengers were targeted during the same attack, with one sustaining injuries.
Four suspects had already been charged with conspiracy to commit Tsengwa's murder. In the day following his killing, two more ANC-linked men were also shot dead in Knysna, deepening concerns about politically motivated violence in the Garden Route town.
