KWAZULU-NATAL — An unidentified woman lost her life after being struck by a concrete truck on Phoenix Highway on Friday, 2 October 2026, in what authorities are investigating as a hit-and-run collision. The incident occurred opposite Rydalvale Grounds in Phoenix.

The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) confirmed on its Facebook page that the victim, believed to be approximately 30 years old, was attempting to cross the busy highway when the heavy vehicle hit her. The driver did not stop and left the scene, with the woman fatally injured in the middle of the road.

RUSA responds to Phoenix Highway fatality

Members of the public who spotted the woman contacted the RUSA Operations Centre, prompting the dispatch of Reaction Officers and medical personnel. Upon arrival, RUSA paramedics assessed the woman and declared her deceased as a result of the severity of her injuries.

The presence of the body on the highway triggered a second incident. A delivery motorcyclist lost control and fell while swerving to avoid her. Paramedics treated him for injuries at the scene.

Local law enforcement was notified to process the scene and launch an investigation into both the collision and the whereabouts of the truck driver. The driver of the concrete truck remains at large. Investigations are ongoing.

Public calls for better safety measures

The incident drew emotional responses from community members on social media, with many mourning the loss and raising broader concerns about safety on Phoenix Highway.

Woman killed during robbery
