Vincent Kompany Hospitalised After Emergency at Bayern Munich Training Ground

  • An air ambulance helicopter reportedly landed at Bayern Munich's Sabener Strasse training facility on Friday
  • Kompany had been battling a severe viral infection for over a week before the emergency unfolded
  • The Belgian coach had already missed training sessions and delegated press duties amid worsening symptoms

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was transported to a Munich hospital on Friday afternoon after an emergency doctor was summoned to the club's Sabener Strasse training base, German outlet BILD has reported. An air ambulance helicopter reportedly touched down at the facility before Kompany left via ambulance.

The 40-year-old Belgian manager had been battling a serious viral infection for more than a week before Friday's incident. The club has not released any official statement regarding his condition.

Vincent Kompany spoke on his health

Kompany himself addressed the media after Bayern's 2-2 Champions League draw against Arsenal on Wednesday, acknowledging that he had refused to slow down despite his deteriorating health.

"I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, then of course I didn't listen to my body, and eventually my body said: Now stop!" he told journalists.
"As a coach, you always want to do everything and take care of everything," he added.

The illness had already disrupted his routine in the days leading up to his hospitalisation. During Bayern's 6-1 win over RB Leipzig, Kompany was forced to rest on a sofa in his office at half-time and after the match. The infection reportedly aggravated old scar tissue, making simple physical tasks such as climbing stairs painful and difficult.

He sat out first-team training sessions earlier in the week, with assistant coach Aaron Danks stepping in to handle media responsibilities.

"The most important thing, which we are encouraging him to do right now, is to rest and take the time he needs – however long that may take," Danks said on Tuesday.

Despite those warnings, Kompany took his place on the touchline for Wednesday's European fixture against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena. Friday's emergency response came just two days later, raising fresh concerns about the extent of his condition.
