Erasmus was quick to rubbish reports that Kolisi being black had any impact on his appointment at all. The coach said he chose Kolisi because he had complete and utter confidence in Kolisi’s leadership abilities.
Briefly.co.za gathered that Kolisi has proven himself as a more than adequate leader of the Stormers franchise. Kolisi possesses five key attributes which justify his appointment by Erasmus.
1. Kolisi is a natural born leader
The new Springbok captain has that something which only certain people have, the quality might be hard to define but is impossible to miss. When he speaks, people generally take note and listen to what he says.
2. His emotional maturity
Kolisi has shown a maturity level which defies his tender age of just 26. He has shown a clarity of thought which many older players can just wish at.
Part of his emotional maturity no-doubt stems from his humble beginnings and having to look after himself since the age of 15 when his mom passed away.
Kolisi doesn’t define himself as a rugby player that is merely one aspect of the whole person he is.
3. Kolisi leads by means of inclusivity
Kolisi doesn’t lead with an iron-fist or a belief that he is always right, instead, he strives to include as many in the decision-making process as he can.
He also regularly reminded teammates that they do not represent just one group of people over another, Kolisi doesn’t see anyone as being superior to anyone else.
4. Empathy
Kolisi is a rare example of a macho-male not being afraid to console a teammate or to provide a safe space for players to address their weaknesses both on and off the field.
He is the first to put up his hand and admit when he makes a mistake.
5. Kolisi is a natural athlete with heaps of rugby talent
The new captain won’t just be making up the numbers in the side. Kolisi is a natural talent who has earned his place in the Springbok team on merit.
He was by far the best loose forward in the team last season.
