A 36-year-old runner has died after collapsing during the Milwaukee Lakefront Half Marathon in Wisconsin on Sunday, 4 October 2026. The runner, John Meise of Waukesha, was taken to Froedtert Hospital after collapsing during the race and was later pronounced dead. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed his identity on Monday.
The incident happened during an event that attracted about 6,000 participants across the full and half marathon races. Both events started at 7am from the Baird Center, with the half marathon course including a crossing of the Hoan Bridge.
Organisers respond after tragic race incident
Following the death, Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon organisers issued a statement expressing their condolences to Meise’s loved ones.

“The Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon extends its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the half marathon participant who passed away following Sunday’s event,” organisers said, according to People.
They added that they were “grateful to the medical personnel, first responders, volunteers and public safety partners” who supported participants throughout the race weekend.
The organisers also said the event had established medical and emergency-response procedures, including medical support along the course and coordinated response planning.
John Meise leaves behind wife and four children
Meise was a father of four and had been running for around six years, according to reports about his family. He is survived by his wife, Lauren, and their children.
The medical examiner said Meise had no known medical history, while his cause of death had not been determined as of the latest reports.

The Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon later highlighted a fundraiser supporting Meise’s family on its official website.
The death came less than a month after another athlete died during the IRONMAN 70.3 event in Madison, Wisconsin, although the two incidents are separate.
No cause of death has been publicly established, and further medical findings would be needed before one can be stated as fact.
