The late former Orlando Pirates striker Tendai Ndoro was found dead in his Sandton apartment on Monday, 18 August. The cause of his death is still unknown.

He was one of Zimbabwe’s most popular footballers, having represented the nation between 2013 and 2017.

On Tuesday, 19 August, a clip of Ndoro speaking about his ex-wife, Thandie Maseko, resurfaced online.

This comes as fans and netizens continue to speculate that Maseko was the reason behind his financial struggles in his final years, particularly after their divorce.

The Zimbabwean international enjoyed a successful spell in the Premier Soccer League. He arrived in South Africa 12 years ago after impressing at the COSAFA Cup with the Warriors and Chicken Inn, before signing with Mpumalanga Black Aces.

In the resurfaced video, Ndoro denied claims that his ex-wife took his houses and cars:

“The story that I lost my houses and cars because of my ex-wife is false. Completely false. We divorced and separated in a very civilised way. When I was playing in Saudi Arabia [2017], I used to earn $6,000 [+R88,000] per week. Every Friday, money was dropped at my hotel in an envelope. Every Saturday morning, I would queue at the bank, sending money home through Western Union. I paid for my wedding and other things in cash.”

Ndoro's health challenges forced him into retirement

Ndoro had been battling health challenges in recent years. He was diagnosed with diabetes in 2021, which affected his eyesight and eventually forced him to retire from football in 2020.

In May, reports claimed he had been hospitalised in Durban with complications linked to diabetes. However, Ndoro released a video message denying the speculation:

“Hello guys, I’m okay. I’m in the hospital, undergoing treatment for a tumour that developed under my armpit. It’s not diabetes. I’m sick, yes, but it’s not that serious.”

Footballer collapses and dies on the pitch

Briefly News previously reported that a football player in Verulam, north of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, collapsed and died on the pitch on Saturday, 16 August, during a league match at the Verulam Recreational Grounds on Todd Street.
