Bongani Zungu has explained why he chose a move to India over remaining in the Premier Soccer League after leaving AmaZulu at the end of the 2025/26 season.

The 33-year-old midfielder joined Indian side Malappuram FC after his departure from Usuthu. However, the move came after he had held discussions with several PSL clubs.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Zungu said negotiations with the South African clubs failed to produce an agreement.

“I spoke to a few PSL clubs after leaving Usuthu, but we could not find a solution regarding the offers on the table,” he said.

Malappuram FC offer convinced Zungu

Zungu eventually decided that Malappuram FC presented the opportunity he was looking for at this stage of his career.

“I’m 33 years old and close to the finish line in terms of my career,” he said.
“I said yes to India because of the offer I got. I was really happy about it, and after the conversation, I felt it was a good move.”

Zungu begins new chapter in India

The move gives Zungu another opportunity to continue his career outside South Africa. He previously played in Portugal, Scotland and France before returning home.

His latest move therefore sees the experienced midfielder embark on another international chapter as he continues his career with Malappuram FC.
