A deadly fire has gutted roughly 100 makeshift homes in the Bagdad informal settlement in Salvokop, Tshwane, claiming one life and stripping close to 200 residents of shelter and belongings in a matter of hours.
Ten children were among those left destitute by the blaze, which swept rapidly through the densely packed neighbourhood. Emergency personnel and senior city officials arrived at the scene shortly after the fire to assess the destruction and begin coordinating immediate relief.
The City of Tshwane's disaster response unit deployed dozens of mattresses to assist survivors, while social development staff organised hot meals for affected residents. City administrators also announced plans to open the municipal food depot early in the week, pending a full assessment of each household's losses so that subsequent aid could be distributed according to individual need.
Several non-governmental organisations and community groups bolstered the official relief effort. Humanitarian partners contributed hundreds of sleeping mats, blankets, hygiene kits and ready-to-eat food parcels, while a local burial society provided further food support to those in need. To address the immediate shelter crisis, the municipality arranged temporary accommodation for displaced families inside a nearby church while longer-term housing options are explored.

City leadership offered condolences to the family of the deceased and expressed sympathy for every resident who lost property and livelihoods to the flames. The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, but local representatives took the opportunity to urge residents of informal settlements to exercise caution around candles, open flames and electrical appliances, noting that close living conditions can allow fires to spread with devastating speed.
Officials stressed that ongoing collaboration between relief organisations and local government will be essential as the community works towards recovery.
