A beach outing ended in heartbreak along the KwaZulu-Natal north coast on Saturday when a 35-year-old man from Witbank, Mpumalanga, disappeared after being overtaken by powerful ocean currents near Ballito.
The incident unfolded at approximately 8am close to the boat launching site at Salmon Bay. A medical professional who happened to be nearby first spotted the man battling the water and raised the alarm before formal emergency services could be mobilised.
In the moments before help arrived, the victim's brother-in-law charged into the surf in a frantic attempt to pull him to safety. The swimmer disappeared beneath the surface before his relative could reach him. The brother-in-law was treated on the beach for scrapes and bruises sustained during the ordeal and did not require hospitalisation.
The rescue operation that followed was one of significant scale. National Sea Rescue Institute swimmers, provincial police, paramedics, municipal search teams, and regional lifeguards all converged on the scene. A rescue jet-ski was deployed into the breaking waves while additional crew members combed the shoreline on foot. Despite the breadth of the search across the bay and along surrounding beaches, no trace of the missing man was found.

Authorities have since opened a missing-person case, and search teams continue to work the area in hopes of locating him.
Rescue officials extended their condolences to the victim's family during what they described as an incredibly difficult time. They used the incident to issue a firm warning to all beachgoers: swim only at beaches with active lifeguard supervision, heed posted warning flags, and stay clear of sections of coastline where currents and surf conditions are unpredictable. Salmon Bay's boat launching area, where the tragedy occurred, was not under lifeguard watch at the time.
