Pitso Mosimane has made another move behind the scenes as he prepares Bafana Bafana for their next major test. The new addition to his technical team is a familiar figure to South African football fans and has previously worked alongside Mosimane at club level. Marcus Mashilo has now been confirmed as Bafana’s new goalkeeper coach, taking up the role ahead of the national team’s AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.
Mosimane made the announcement on Monday, 21 September, as Bafana began preparations for their first competitive matches under his new spell in charge. TimesLIVE reports that Mashilo has now joined the national setup after previously working with Mosimane at Mamelodi Sundowns.
“The technical team is complete now — we’ve got Marcus Mashilo to help us as goalkeeper coach,” Mosimane said.

Marcus Mashilo brings Sundowns and Golden Arrows experience
Mashilo has worked across several South African clubs, including Sundowns, Golden Arrows and Marumo Gallants.
Explaining the decision, Mosimane highlighted Mashilo’s experience with established goalkeepers at Sundowns.
“He trained Kenney [Mweene], trained Denis [Onyango], trained all the big players at Sundowns where he achieved a lot and contributed to a lot of trophies,” Mosimane said.
Mashilo previously worked as an assistant goalkeeper coach to Wendell Robinson at Sundowns and later worked with Manqoba Mngqithi at Golden Arrows. Mashilo replaces Grant Johnson, who served as Bafana’s goalkeeper coach under former coach Hugo Broos, including during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bafana Bafana face Guinea before Eritrea
South Africa will host Guinea on 26 September in their opening AFCON 2027 qualifier before travelling to Cairo for the Eritrea match on 30 September. CAF lists the Guinea kick-off as 16:00 GMT, but SABC Sport has indicated that it will be broadcasting the match from 14:30 South African time.
Bafana will then face Egypt in a friendly on 4 October.
Mosimane’s new technical team will therefore have little time to settle before a demanding international window begins.
Bafana Bafana technical team gets another addition
Briefly News previously reported that Pitso Mosimane had confirmed his 30-man Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming AFCON 2027 qualifiers and Egypt friendly.
The squad includes three goalkeepers, but Mosimane has now added another familiar figure to the technical team ahead of the busy international window.
The new appointment comes just days before Bafana face Guinea in Orlando.
