Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Vuyo Mere has criticised Kaizer Chiefs following their elimination from the MTN8 in the quarter-final round, saying the result left him personally deflated.
Speaking to iDiski Times journalist Lethabo Kganyago, Mere, who serves as the 2026 Wafa Wafa ambassador, said he had high expectations for Amakhosi after their encouraging start to the league campaign.
Chiefs returned to the MTN8 for the first time in three seasons this year, having qualified by finishing third in the Premiership last term. Their early exit proved a blow not only to supporters but also to pundits who had anticipated a strong run.

**Mere's Hope Faded After Golden Arrows Defeat**
Mere acknowledged that he holds a particular affection for the Soweto club, citing their unrivalled support base as a key reason South African football needs them competing at the highest level.
"I think South African football just needs Kaizer Chiefs because we all know the support that they have, and it's something that, at MTN8, it was going to make a difference to have all the games sold out because we know when Amakhosi is playing, it doesn't matter where it is, they will fill up the stadium," Mere told iDiski Times.
He noted that wins against Kruger United away and Sekhukhune United had convinced him the club had turned a corner and was ready to challenge for silverware. A subsequent 1-0 home defeat to Golden Arrows, however, extinguished that optimism.
"But yes, Amakhosi disappointed me, and they started very well in the league. We saw when they beat Kruger [United] away, and then they beat Sekhukhune [United]. You think that the team is back now, that they've got an objective to win something, and then they lost 1-0 to Golden Arrows at home. That was really disappointing for me," he said.

The MTN8 had represented a significant milestone for Kaizer Chiefs, marking their comeback to the competition after a three-season absence. The quarter-final exit cut short what many had hoped would be a deep run in the knockout tournament.
