JJ Kotzé has been handed a three-week suspension after his red card against Bristol Bears in the Investec Champions Cup, ruling the Stormers hooker out of action during a key period of the season. An independent committee delivered the disciplinary decision on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, after reviewing the incident.
The 25-year-old was sent off in the 33rd minute of last week's match for a dangerous tackle on Bristol scrum-half Kieran Marmion. The Stormers challenged the proposed sanction after a foul play review committee recommended a three-week ban.
Stormers challenge fails as disciplinary committee upholds red card
SA Rugby Magazine reports that Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson explained the club's position before the hearing, saying:

“If our view is it's not a red card, we'd like them to decide that for us.”
Kotzé accepted that he had committed foul play but disputed whether the incident warranted a red card. The independent committee upheld the dismissal and classified the offence as mid-range, with a six-week entry point.
The sanction was reduced by the maximum 50%, taking into account Kotzé's disciplinary record and his conduct during the hearing.
When can JJ Kotzé return to the Stormers?
The suspension means Kotzé's return depends on whether he completes World Rugby's coaching intervention programme. Without that option, he is eligible to play again on Monday, 7 December, after the November international break.
However, if he applies for and completes the programme, he could return as early as Monday, 2 November. Both Kotzé and European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) can appeal the disciplinary decision.
The timing creates a selection challenge for the Stormers, who are scheduled to host the Scarlets at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, 24 October, before facing Ulster the following week.
What the suspension means for the Stormers
The Stormers must prepare for their upcoming fixtures while Kotzé's availability remains uncertain. His potential early return depends on completing the intervention programme, while an appeal could also affect the outcome.
The committee's decision settles the initial disciplinary hearing, but the possibility of further action means the situation is not necessarily final. For now, the Stormers must plan around the three-week ban as they continue their United Rugby Championship campaign.
Jonathan Roche turns down Ireland and Zimbabwe as he targets the Springboks
Briefly News previously reported that Stormers centre Jonathan Roche had attracted international interest, with both Ireland and Zimbabwe exploring the possibility of securing his services. However, the 23-year-old remains focused on representing the Springboks as his rugby career continues to gain momentum.
Roche has impressed for the Stormers, including scoring twice in their 49-12 Champions Cup victory over Bristol Bears on 17 October 2026.
