JOHANNESBURG — Kaizer Chiefs could be welcoming back winger Langelihle Phili sooner than expected, with the 21-year-old edging closer to fitness during the ongoing FIFA international break.
Phili joined Amakhosi from Stellenbosch FC in August and made an immediate impact in his opening appearances at Naturena. His promising start came to an abrupt halt after he picked up an injury following the club's 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns on 15 August 2026, a match in which he scored before being withdrawn.
Da Cruz confirms eight-week absence
Head coach Fernando Da Cruz confirmed shortly after the injury that Phili would require around eight weeks of rehabilitation before returning to competitive action. Based on that timeline, a return in mid-to-late October remains a realistic target. However, his readiness will ultimately depend on how his recovery progresses.

The timing of the international break could prove beneficial, giving Phili extra time to rebuild his fitness and ease back into full training before Chiefs return to league action in October.
Soweto Derby return on the cards
Should Phili's recovery stay on course, he could be available in time for the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates. The fixture carries enormous weight for both clubs and their supporters.
Da Cruz will be eager to have a full complement of attacking options available heading into what promises to be a demanding stretch of fixtures, both domestically and on the continent.
Phili is not the only player using the break to work back to fitness: goalkeepers Brandon Petersen and attackers Khanyisa Mayo and Flavio Silva are also monitoring their conditions during this period.
Phili has already established himself as a firm favourite among Amakhosi supporters despite featuring in only three matches since his arrival. This makes his return a much-anticipated development as Chiefs look to mount a serious title challenge.

Kyra Comins’ football journey draws Chiefs attention
Briefly News previously reported that Langelihle Phili’s girlfriend, Kyra Comins, also caught the attention of Kaizer Chiefs supporters.
The goalkeeper has built her own football career and previously played in the United States. Comins has also publicly supported Phili throughout his journey, including after his move to Naturena.
Her football background and relationship with the Chiefs winger have made her another talking point among Amakhosi fans.
