Pitso Mosimane has faced fresh criticism from former Al Ahly head of football Adly El-Qiai, who has made a series of serious claims about the South African coach’s time at the Egyptian giants.

El-Qiai worked with Mosimane between 2020 and 2022, during a period in which the coach guided Al Ahly to consecutive CAF Champions League titles. Mosimane joined the Cairo club in September 2020 and departed in June 2022.

Speaking to Egyptian publication El Balad, El-Qiai accused the former Bafana Bafana coach of costing Al Ahly a league title.

“Mosimane pulled off the trick of a lifetime on us,” El-Qiai said, according to Soccer Laduma.

El-Qiai also accused Mosimane of costing Al Ahly a league title and questioned the coach’s commitment during his final period at the club.

He further claimed that Mosimane spent extended periods away from the club.

“He took a lot of leave and spent 20 days outside the club, and that is not something that comes from professional coaches,” El-Qiai added.

Mosimane’s Al Ahly record under scrutiny

Mosimane’s record at Al Ahly included major continental success. He won the Champions League in 2020 and 2021, with the latter triumph coming after a 3-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in Casablanca. Confédération Africaine de Football

However, his domestic record was less dominant. Al Ahly finished second in the 2020-21 Egyptian Premier League and third in 2021-22.

El-Qiai also criticised Mosimane’s public comments about his squad.

“I didn't like Mosimane in press conferences,” he said. “After a match, he would say: ‘If I had these players at Al Ahly, I would have achieved more.’”

The former official added:

“He's not impressed with the players - he's impressed with himself and just exaggerates.”

El-Qiai went on to accuse Mosimane of being stubborn and personal in his handling of certain players.

“He is stubborn and personal, and if he takes a position against a player, he finishes him off, just as he did with Aliou Badji,” he said.

Mosimane’s two Champions League triumphs remain a significant part of his Al Ahly legacy. The 2021 victory gave him his third Champions League title as a coach, following his 2016 success with Mamelodi Sundowns.

The latest comments therefore reopen debate around a spell that delivered historic continental success but also ended with questions over Al Ahly’s domestic performances.
