A former CEO of the South African Football Association (SAFA) has alleged in divorce court papers that his wife tried to set him alight inside their Johannesburg home during a dispute over an alleged affair.

The couple, who are known to Africa Daily but cannot be identified at this stage for legal reasons, are involved in divorce proceedings before the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg. The case also involves a dispute over the division of their joint estate.

Former SAFA CEO details alleged petrol incident

According to the former CEO's affidavit, the alleged incident happened in late October 2022 after his wife accused him of having an extramarital affair with a woman based in Polokwane.

In the court papers, he alleges that his wife threw petrol at him and attempted to set him alight in their main bedroom. He says he managed to intervene and prevent the alleged attack from going further..

The former CEO further claims that his wife later apologised during a recorded conversation and said she had only intended to frighten him because she feared he would leave the marriage. According to his affidavit, the incident followed a disagreement over his intention to attend the funeral of his second-born son's aunt.

He alleges that his wife opposed the trip and accused him of having romantic feelings for his son's mother.

Former CEO describes February 2023 incident

The affidavit also details an alleged incident in February 2023 involving the former CEO, his eldest son and his wife.

He alleges that his wife physically attacked him and his son after he refused to allow her to accompany him to a tombstone unveiling in Limpopo. The former CEO says that while he was away, family members became concerned about his wife's condition and arranged for her to receive emergency medical treatment at Sunninghill Hospital.

He says he abandoned plans to remain in Limpopo overnight and returned to Johannesburg.

The former CEO claims that he later discovered a note written by his wife concerning the incident. He says the note blamed him for her decision to harm herself.

The former SAFA executive further alleges that his wife repeatedly told him that "only death will separate us".

He claims that she also made statements during a recorded conversation that led him to believe she intended to kill him and then take her own life. The former CEO says the alleged incidents have left him genuinely fearful for his safety.

He argues in his affidavit that there is no reasonable prospect of restoring the marriage because of what he describes as the breakdown of the relationship and the incidents he alleges occurred during it.

The allegations form part of ongoing divorce proceedings and have not been established as criminal findings against the wife. The wife has disputed aspects of her husband's account in the divorce proceedings.

The court will ultimately determine the issues before it based on the evidence and arguments presented by both parties.
