Sandile Zungu says he remains “in very high spirits” after losing the South African Football Association (SAFA) presidential election to Danny Jordaan, despite entering the contest determined to bring change to South African football.
The AmaZulu chairperson addressed his supporters on Facebook on 12 September 2026, shortly after the election results were announced. Zungu thanked those who backed his campaign and accepted the outcome.
“Such is the nature of contestations. You win some and lose some. I lost and have personally congratulated Dr Danny Jordaan. I am really very easy about my fate, and I am in very high spirits,” Zungu wrote.

Jordaan secured 157 votes, while Zungu received 82 at the SAFA Elective Congress in Midrand on Saturday, 12 September. The result handed Jordaan a fourth consecutive term as SAFA president.

Zungu also acknowledged those who believed he could lead the organisation in a different direction.
“Thank you everyone for believing I can champion the much-needed change in South African football,” he said.
He added that the voting delegates “didn’t believe” his campaign had made the stronger case.
His comments came after weeks of campaigning in which Zungu promoted changes around governance, grassroots development, schools’ football and the women’s game.
Zungu’s message after an intense campaign
Before the election, Zungu said he was confident that his campaign would prevail, declaring in a Facebook post five days before the vote that change at SAFA was inevitable and that he was certain of victory.
The election result has now closed that chapter, although Zungu has not ruled out seeking the presidency again in future. He said he needed time to reflect before making such a decision.
The result leaves Jordaan in charge of SAFA for another four years, while Zungu’s response signals that he intends to accept the outcome without prolonging the election dispute.
Herman Mashaba weighs in on Danny Jordaan’s SAFA victory

Mashaba reacted after Jordaan defeated Sandile Zungu 157-82 at the SAFA elective congress on 12 September 2026. He wrote on X that South Africa “doesn’t just tolerate criminality” but allegedly “reward[s] it and proudly normalise[s] it”.
