Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh and his family are grieving the loss of his eldest son, Jack, who has died at the age of 21. The Waugh family confirmed the tragic news in a statement released on Friday.
The family described Jack as a warm and fun-loving young man whose personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. They said his death had left them devastated and asked for privacy as they come to terms with the loss.

Charlie's tribute to his brother

Jack's difficult start to life
Jack Waugh’s early years were shaped by serious medical challenges. He was born 13 weeks premature and weighed less than one kilogram, resulting in a three-month stay in intensive care. The experience inspired his father, Phil Waugh, to become an ambassador for the Miracle Babies Foundation, which hosts an annual 10km walk in Sydney.
Reflecting on the difficult period in 2019, Phil described the experience as deeply confronting and frightening for any parent. He recalled the uncertainty surrounding Jack’s health after his premature birth and the prolonged period the family spent in intensive care, unsure of what the eventual outcome would be.
Phil later confirmed that Jack made a full recovery and suffered no lasting effects from his premature birth, while acknowledging that other families had faced less fortunate circumstances.
Phil Waugh earned 79 Test caps for Australia and made 136 appearances for the NSW Waratahs in Super Rugby before moving into rugby administration. He is currently the chief executive of Rugby Australia.
