The widow of former SABC Sports presenter Owen Ndlovu, Portia Ndlovu, is drawing on every ounce of strength she has to hold herself together for her children, even as the family grapples with the brutal and confusing circumstances of his death.

Ndlovu was abducted at gunpoint on Tuesday night in Katlehong while picking his wife up from church. Armed men forced him into his own Ford Raptor, and he was later found dead by residents in Thokoza on Wednesday morning.

Family puzzled by Owen's final moments

What has left those closest to Ndlovu unable to find peace is how events allegedly unfolded. Family spokesperson Eugene Mthethwa told Daily Sun that Ndlovu had tried to cooperate with his attackers from the outset.

"He was offering the keys and the car because he thought that they wanted the car. Because they fought him and pushed him and forced him into the car and overpowered him," Mthethwa was quoted by the publication.

The family cannot understand why the men would abandon the vehicle after taking it, pursue Ndlovu after he reportedly managed to escape, and then shoot him. The senselessness of the sequence of events has only deepened the grief.

Mthethwa described the presenter's wife as a remarkably strong woman who had been trying to stay composed, particularly for the sake of their children, even as she processed the horror of what had happened to her husband.

R60 Million SAMRO Dispute Adds Heavy Undertone

The tragedy carries additional weight that those close to the family have not missed. Ndlovu was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, the very day his body was discovered, in connection with an ongoing royalties dispute with the South African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO). Those familiar with the case say the legal battle centred on approximately R60 million in royalties.

Whether or not the court date bears any connection to his killing has not been confirmed, but its timing has left many deeply unsettled. The family continues to mourn while trying to make sense of a loss that has brought far more questions than answers.
