Springbok flyhalf Handré Pollard edged closer to Percy Montgomery's all-time Springbok Test points record following the Springboks' 42-38 defeat to Australia at Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday, 28 September 2026.
Pollard contributed seven points to the Springboks' total, slotting two conversions and a penalty during the 48 minutes he spent on the field. The performance was not among his sharpest, but he still added points.
Handré Pollard closing in on Percy Montgomery's record
Across 88 Tests in the green and gold jersey, Pollard has now accumulated 844 points at an average of 9.6 points per match. His tally comprises eight tries, 132 conversions, 175 penalties and five drop goals.

Montgomery's all-time record of 893 points, set over 102 Tests, remains intact. The gap between the two now stands at 49 points, meaning Pollard would need approximately five to six more Tests at his current rate to overtake the former fullback and claim the top position on the list.
At 32, Pollard has time in his favour. However, a series of injuries in recent seasons has disrupted his availability for the national side and could complicate his pursuit of the record.

Where Handré Pollard sits among the Springbok greats
Pollard is currently second on the all-time Springbok Test points list, ahead of Morné Steyn, who sits third with 742 points from 68 Tests. Bryan Habana and Elton Jantjies follow with 335 and 331 points respectively. Naas Botha, Joel Stransky and Braam van Straaten round out the list of players to have passed 200 Test points for South Africa.
Pollard remains the only active player in the top eight, which means the record is his to claim should fitness and form hold.
Springboks' depth questions emerge after Perth defeat
Briefly News previously reported that the Springboks’ 42-38 defeat to Australia in Perth also raised questions about squad depth ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
