Springbok star Cheslin Kolbe says he is “halfway there” in his recovery from the broken jaw he suffered against New Zealand, with the 32-year-old still waiting before he can properly enjoy a steak again.
Kolbe suffered the injury on 5 September during South Africa’s 29-24 victory over the All Blacks at FNB Stadium. He left the match after only nine minutes following a collision while defending inside the Springboks’ 22-metre area. Rassie Erasmus later confirmed that Kolbe had broken his jaw.
A month later, Kolbe has offered supporters a more personal glimpse into his rehabilitation.
In an Instagram post shared on 6 October, he wrote:

“For all those asking and checking in. Halfway there before I can finally chew a steak. But thank you to everyone for their well wishes! Cannot wait to be back on the field again!”
He added:
“One month in. God is in control.”

Springbok star faces long road back
Kolbe’s injury ended his involvement in the four-Test series against New Zealand. South Africa went on to complete a 3-1 series victory.
Jaw fractures can require several weeks before a player is ready for contact training, although the exact recovery period depends on the injury and treatment.
Kolbe has also kept his sense of humour during the process. In another update, he joked:
“Dr gives me 30 minutes after two weeks to eat anything I want in his office before locking me up again.”
The comment referred to restrictions around his jaw while it heals.
Cheslin Kolbe keeps fans updated
The latest message will be welcomed by Springbok supporters who have followed Kolbe’s recovery since the injury.
His focus now appears clear: complete the recovery, get back to normal eating and eventually return to the field.
For a player whose night against the All Blacks lasted just nine minutes, there is still a lengthy road back. But after one month, Kolbe’s own update suggests he is making progress — with steak serving as perhaps the tastiest measure of his recovery.
