  • Cheslin Kolbe suffered a broken jaw during South Africa's Test against New Zealand at FNB Stadium in Soweto
  • The Stormers confirmed Kolbe would be unavailable for the Springboks' upcoming Nations Championship tour
  • Stormers head coach John Dobson addressed the injury at a press conference, revealing when Kolbe is expected to return

Springbok winger Cheslin Kolbe will miss South Africa's Nations Championship campaign after sustaining a broken jaw during Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand.

The injury occurred at FNB Stadium in Soweto, where Kolbe was forced off the field just nine minutes into South Africa's Test against the All Blacks. He suffered the blow while making a tackle inside the Springboks' 22, with head coach Rassie Erasmus later confirming the diagnosis and ruling Kolbe out for the remainder of the series.

Despite losing their star winger early in the match, the Springboks secured a 29-24 victory and went on to win the series 3-1, consolidating their position at the top of the world rankings ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

"He's not going to make the Springbok tour, but he's available for us from the start of December," Dobson said. "He's attending team meetings; he's so involved, we can't wait to have him. So there's a silver lining in that."

Dobson acknowledged that Kolbe's absence would be felt at international level. "I'm sure the Springboks are going to miss him on the end-of-year tour. I don't know if he makes it, maybe later on in the tour, I'm not close enough to it. But I know he's with us from the beginning of December onwards."

The Stormers coach added a lighter note, referencing the traditional recovery period in South African rugby: "Because in South African rugby, they speak of that three-week compulsory rest period as 'beer and braai'. I think neither would apply for Cheslin, but at least he's got his rest, and he's ready to go, so he's very excited about that."

Springboks Face Tough Nations Championship Schedule

South Africa face Italy, France and Ireland away from home during the Nations Championship, before travelling to Allianz Stadium for the finals weekend. If they finish as the top-ranked Southern Hemisphere side, they will meet the leading Northern Hemisphere team in the inaugural competition's final.

The Springboks, who have claimed back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles, will be eager to make a further statement ahead of next year's tournament in Australia — though they will have to do so without one of their most potent attacking threats for the foreseeable future.
