Reggae fans globally are mourning the fatal shooting of Donald Shaw alias Tabby the lead singer of Mighty Diamonds in Jamaica.

The singer and Owen Beckford believed to be his relative were killed in the incident that happened on McKinley Crescent in St Andrew.

Three others who were in the company of the deceased were also shot and sustained injuries.

According to St Andrew Police Division’s senior superintendent, Kirk Ricketts revealed that investigations have indicated the shooting could be related to a local gang conflict.

The police boss added that the police department is investigating whether criminal activities are attributed to Shaw’s son who is being held led to Tabby being targeted.

In a statement, the two deceased individuals were standing outside a retail shop in McKinley Crescent when a gunman opened fire, hitting five people.

The musician was shot multiple times in the face multiple times and was rushed to a local hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival.

Hit songs

The Mighty Diamonds was established in 1969 by trio Tabby, Lloyd Ferguson alias Judge and Fitzroy Simpson, stage name Bunny.

Their greatest hit 'Pass the Kouchie' propelled the group to the global limelight. Their debut album 'Right Time' performed well globally.

'I Need a Roof' was also of their best performing hits for the group which was conferred with the national honour of Order of Distinction in the Officer Class in 2021.

Olivia Grange, Jamaica’s culture minister condemned the incident saying the demise of the artiste had left a gap in the music industry.

Grammy award-winning group Morgan Heritage's Lukes Morgan expressed sadness at the incident.

On his Twitter account, the musician Lukes wrote:

“No this doesn’t make any sense. Rest In Peace to the great Tabby Diamond, one of the legends of our music.”

Lucky Dube: Mzansi shows appreciation to the reggae legend

Meanwhile, Briefly News previously reported that South Africa remembered one of the country's biggest icons. Lucky Dube filled social media timelines as fans shared some of his most famous words of wisdom.

SowetanLIVE reported that even years after his murder, Lucky Dube remains a major part of South African music. The reggae icon is still one of Mzansi's top-selling artists to this day. His catalogue remains a popular choice because it spreads a message of global peace and unity.

The marketing manager of Lucky Dube's record label spoke to the public about the reach that the late legend's music has.
