Johannesburg Ranked 7th Best Nightlife City in the World for 2026

• Time Out magazine ranked Johannesburg 7th globally for nightlife, placing it ahead of Amsterdam, Madrid, and Seoul
• The city's house, gqom, Afro-house and drum and bass music scenes drove its top spot on the African continent
• Accra also made the global top 20, signalling Africa's growing influence on the world's after-dark economy

Johannesburg has been named the best nightlife city in Africa and the seventh best in the world, according to Time Out magazine's 2026 global nightlife rankings.

The rankings were compiled using responses from more than 24,000 local residents, alongside input from culture and nightlife experts. Cities were evaluated on the quality and diversity of their music scenes, affordability, sense of community, and overall atmosphere.

Joburg beats Amsterdam and Seoul

Johannesburg finished ahead of well-known nightlife destinations including Amsterdam, Madrid, and Seoul. The city earned particular praise for its music diversity, with house, techno, Afro-house, gqom, and drum and bass all contributing to a scene that locals say keeps reinventing itself. Two-thirds of residents, 66%, rated the city's nightlife as affordable, while 80% said going out in Joburg gave them a strong sense of community and social connection.

The global rankings were led by Bangkok in first place, followed by Berlin in second and Melbourne in third.

Accra joins Joburg in the top 20

Ghana's capital, Accra, also secured a place on the list, coming in at number 18 worldwide. The city was recognised for the variety of its nightlife districts, from the established hub of Osu to newer upscale venues emerging in East Legon. Accra's scene stretches beyond mainstream Afrobeats into alté, electronic music, and live performances. Some 62% of residents highlighted affordability, 75% said it was easy to find community there, and 65% described the city's nightlife culture as welcoming.

The inclusion of both cities underlines the rising global profile of African nightlife and its cultural reach well beyond the continent.
