Determined student refused to give up after failing matric 5 times

- Nontobeko Mzimela was crushed when she failed matric in 2014

- She kept trying but kept failing

Nontobeko Mzimela (23) from eSikhaleni simply refused to accept failure as an option. Her determination was commendable, she failed 5 times but kept on trying.

Briefly.co.za learned that she decided that 2019 would be different and it was. Not only did she pass matric but bagged two distinctions while she was at it as well as a level 6 pass in her other subjects.

‘It has been a very difficult journey, but I’m glad I never gave up on myself but persevered,’ she said

In 2014 she wrote her first exam when she saw her results she was devastated, she tried again in 2015 without success according to zululandobserver.co.za.

‘In 2016 I wrote exams in only two subjects that I had failed, and still I didn’t pass.
‘I almost gave up but tried to upgrade my subjects in 2017, but still didn’t make it.
‘I was very depressed and heartbroken, especially because people around me also became disappointed.
‘In 2018 I went back to Grade 11 at Dlamvuzo and passed well to advance to Grade 12, and that’s when I told myself I had to make sure I passed this year,’ said an emotional Nontobeko.

Her success and determination have inspired others around her. While she was studying in 2019 she was a team leader at weekend and afternoon classes and helped drive her school's academic programme.

She plans on studying law or nursing at the University of Zululand.
