A South African woman's approach to making her informal dwelling feel like home has struck a deep chord with people across the country.

Selwa Kusie Jingos posted photos of her decorated mkhukhu on 26 August 2026 in the Facebook group Decorating our mkhukhu/Shacks and cooking simple meals. The images showed a corrugated metal structure that had been transformed inside with thoughtful décor, small comforts and a patch of artificial grass outside, all achieved on a tight budget.

Her caption kept it simple but powerful:

"Make your own space comfortable. One item a month is a huge progress."

Cosy living on a tight budget

What caught people's attention was not just how the space looked, but how she got there. Rather than waiting until she could afford everything at once, Selwa adopted a slow, intentional approach to building her home, adding one item at a time each month. The interior, which even included a toilet, showed just how much is possible with patience and creativity.

The post quickly drew attention from people who saw themselves in her story.
