Content creator Shamein Unfiltered, a Business Intelligence analyst with 67,000 followers on Facebook, posted a before-and-after photo comparison of her kitchen on 18 August 2026. The two images told a story that stopped people mid-scroll.

The "before" photo showed a simple shack kitchen. Clean and tidy despite its limitations, it had a basic sink, a small stove, tables used for storage, a single light bulb hanging from the ceiling, and pots and dishes neatly packed away. Through the window, another shack was visible outside.

The "after" photo was a world apart. The new kitchen featured black-and-white tiled walls, warm wooden built-in cupboards, marble-look countertops, modern appliances, a gas stove, a sleek black tap and a wine rack. Downlights lit up a decorative drop ceiling, giving the space a polished, considered finish.

"Before vs After ❤️ 🤩"

Speaking to Briefly News writer Nerissa Naidoo, financial expert Farook Mohammed discussed how homeowners can manage the costs:

"You don't have to modernise your entire home at once. Set a small monthly amount aside and focus on one improvement at a time, starting with what needs the most attention. Planning your purchases and comparing prices can also help you avoid unnecessary debt."

Briefly News also asked construction expert Mr P Moodley what homeowners should consider when modernising an older home. He said:

"Start with the practical parts of the home before focusing only on appearance. Check for issues such as damaged walls, roofing, plumbing or wiring first, then plan the improvements around your budget. This helps make sure your money is spent on changes that will last."

From a shack to a showpiece home

The contrast between the two kitchens captured something many South Africans understand deeply: the grind of building a better life from humble beginnings. Her followers were quick to recognise what the images represented, not just an upgraded space, but the result of real effort and determination.
