Veteran South African actor Josias Moleele has spoken candidly about stepping into one of Skeem Saam's most familiar roles, and the unexpected phone call that helped settle his nerves before he even set foot on set.
Moleele makes his official debut as Marothi on the popular SABC1 drama on Thursday, 15 October 2026, filling the shoes of Macks Papo, who departed the role after returning to the show earlier this year but being unable to continue filming due to personal reasons. Skeem Saam PR Manager Yvonne Siphuka acknowledged Papo's contribution, recognising how his portrayal helped shape the character into someone audiences had grown to love.
Macks Papo's blessing made all the difference
In an interview with Kaya 959, Moleele admitted that excitement and nerves hit him in equal measure when he learnt he had been cast. His greatest concern was how viewers would respond to a new face carrying such an established character.

Before accepting the challenge fully, he picked up the phone and called Papo directly. What he learnt during that conversation changed his entire approach.
"I made a call to Macks to find out, and I realised that he is not well and has given up the role. He gave me his blessings, and I think that made it easier for me," Moleele said.
Moleele has no plans to imitate his predecessor
Rather than trying to replicate what Papo built over years on screen, Moleele is bringing his own interpretation to Marothi. He says Papo himself encouraged exactly that approach during their conversation.
"I am bringing my own characterisation and my own process. Having spoken to Macks personally, he said to me, 'Hey, man, I know you, and I know you're going to bring it on in your own way. Don't mimic me.'"
As for what fans can look forward to, Moleele teased a Marothi navigating serious financial pressure while refusing to stay down. The actor, who is known for his comedic sensibility, hinted that humour will feature prominently in how the character manoeuvres through his troubles.
