WESTERN CAPE — Two people were killed and three others wounded in a series of shootings that struck Hanover Park, Cape Town, on Saturday morning, with police pointing to gang territorial disputes as the likely motive.
South African Police Service spokesperson Wesley Twigg confirmed that investigators suspect the attacks are connected to ongoing turf conflicts and gang hostilities in the area.
Two victims shot dead at separate locations
The first fatality occurred in John Vlei Walk, where a 46-year-old man was shot multiple times in the upper body. Medical responders pronounced him dead at the scene. A second fatal shooting unfolded along Surran Road, where a 19-year-old sustained gunshot wounds and later died from his injuries.

Three further victims caught in the crossfire were transported by ambulance to nearby medical facilities for emergency and trauma treatment. Their conditions have not been officially confirmed.
SAPS deploys additional units
The rapid sequence of attacks triggered an immediate operational response. Additional SAPS units and municipal law enforcement officers moved into Hanover Park, establishing temporary cordons and intensifying patrols to prevent retaliatory confrontations between rival gangs.
Detectives opened murder and attempted murder dockets and are processing both crime scenes for ballistic evidence. Police have called on community members to submit information through anonymous tip-off channels.
The violence in Hanover Park is part of a persistent security crisis gripping the Cape Flats, where gang rivalries over illicit drug routes regularly endanger residents. The shootings come as South Africa prepares for nationwide local government elections. Senior Western Cape police leadership has previously assured the public that gang and taxi unrest would not compromise the safety of voting precincts or electoral staff, though incidents such as these continue to strain local law enforcement capacity.
