South African Police Service representatives verified the detentions on Thursday, 29 October 2026. The apprehended group, ranging in age from 15 to 21 years old, faces pending court appearances on armed robbery and illegal firearm charges.

Two male accomplices subsequently boarded the vehicle. One assailant yanked the emergency brake while the group robbed the driver of cash, identification papers, and bank cards. An additional perpetrator outside discharged a handgun while attempting to take the driver's mobile phone before the group fled empty-handed regarding the device.

Dashboard camera recordings depicting the robbery spread rapidly across online platforms on Wednesday. In the footage, a female passenger grabs for the driver's phone while a rear passenger activates the handbrake. Shouts to shoot the driver are audible as the operator exits the sedan and runs to safety.

Follow-up video and public reaction

A second recording surfaced late Wednesday, 28 October, showing a young woman watching the dashcam clip alongside an older woman identified on social media as her mother. The video drew widespread attention online.

Addressing rumors circulating about the clip, police clarified that the driver escaped without physical injuries, refuting online posts claiming the victim had been killed.
