DURBAN — Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has approached the High Court urgently, seeking an interdict to prevent the March and March Movement from staging protests in parts of Durban, including near the Department of Home Affairs Refugee Reception Centre on Che Guevara Road.
March and March Movement leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma disclosed the legal action on X on 28 October 2026, posting images of the court documents she said her movement had received. The amended notice of motion lists the Minister of Home Affairs as the tenth respondent and targets the first to seventh respondents, prohibiting them from assembling, mobilising, marching, or staging any related activity in the affected area, which encompasses the eThekwini Municipality and the Durban Central Business District.

The application, filed under the Regulation of Gatherings Act 205 of 1993, is scheduled to be heard on Friday, 30 October 2025 at 10h00. The court orders sought also prohibit conduct such as threatening, intimidating, looting, setting fire to property, and causing damage in the area.
"We just received court papers from the Minister of Police with instructions that we must be interdicted from Marching and we must not be allowed to organise a March, picket, motorcade or stage any of them; on top of that, we must not go to a Home Affairs Department!" Ngobese-Zuma wrote in her post, urging supporters to attend the court hearing.

Cachalia's move comes amid national unrest
The application follows a period of escalating anti-immigration unrest across several South African provinces, with groups such as March and March staging demonstrations directed at undocumented foreign nationals. Ngobese-Zuma has led such marches in Durban.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, speaking to reporters in eMagabheni, eThekwini, on 28 October 2026 while campaigning for the ANC, addressed the tension directly. "We as government have said we are the only authority that has the power and ability to deal with illegal migration," Ramaphosa stated, adding that arrests related to illegal activities were already underway.
