A luxury mansion in one of Harare's most sought-after suburbs has set social media alight. Its listing price left thousands of people questioning whether Zimbabwe's property market makes any sense at all.

Tatenda Chiki, a verified real estate agent, posted the listing on 28 October for a double-storey home in Shawasha Hills, Harare North. The asking price: $2.7 million, negotiable. Converted to rands, that works out to roughly R46 million.

The property is hard to fault on paper. Spread across 1.34 hectares, the home offers 6 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms and 1,400 square metres of living space. Features include glossy grey marble floors, circular columns, sliding doors, a rectangular swimming pool on a timber deck, solar panels, a borehole and covered parking. It is, by any measure, an impressive build. But it was the price tag that sent people into a spin. See the listing that started the debate:

"For that amount, I'd buy 2 equally impressive properties in South Africa."
