Ian Visagie, a 27-year-old man from Welkom in the Free State, died in a motorcycle accident on Tuesday evening, 20 October 2026, just three days after marrying his wife, Elisma.
The collision happened at around 8:00 p.m. outside Riebeeckstad. Ian was riding his motorcycle to fetch Elisma from her parents' home in Welkom when his bike allegedly struck a truck. Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
The couple had wed the previous Saturday, 17 October. Their life together had barely begun. Elisma is a teacher at Wessel Maree High School in Odendaalsrus. Ian leaves behind Elisma and their two-year-old daughter, Tilara.
Elisma's heartbreaking tribute
In a tribute shared on Facebook, Elisma wrote about the life she and Ian had imagined together — growing old side by side, raising Tilara, marking birthdays and anniversaries. She wrote:

"On Saturday I became Mrs. Visagie, and by Tuesday I was a widow. How can one's whole world change like that in just three days?"
She revealed that her first signature as a Visagie was not on a happy occasion, but on her husband's death certificate. Despite her grief, she was resolute. Adding that she would ensure Tilara grew up knowing the man her father was, she wrote:
"I only got three days to be your wife, but I will proudly wear the title of your wife for the rest of my life."
His sister, Jolene Visagie, also paid tribute on Facebook, describing Ian as the centre of her world. She spoke about his deep love for family and the pride she felt watching him be a father to Tilara. She wrote:
"Anyone who knows me knows that you are my life, my heart."
She said his passing left a void that was impossible to fill.
Family sets up memorial fund
Friends and family have launched a BackaBuddy campaign titled "Memorial Service for Ian" to help cover funeral costs including food, flowers and memorial books. Jolene confirmed that any remaining funds would go towards Tilara's school fees and savings account. Ian's memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, 31 October at 11:00 at the Dutch Reformed Church Welkom-Suid.
Family and friends remember Ian as someone with a warm sense of humour who always found a way to lift the spirits of those around him.
