  • Benni McCarthy, a former Man United attacking coach, named his ideal replacement for Michael Carrick
  • McCarthy explained why his preferred candidate would be unlikely to make the move to Old Trafford
  • The ex-Cape Town City boss also outlined what Man United must do to restore stability at the club

Kenya head coach Benni McCarthy has named Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique as his dream candidate to replace Michael Carrick at Manchester United, while also calling on the club to stand behind their current boss.

Carrick is under mounting pressure at Old Trafford after Manchester United managed only two wins from their opening 12 league matches this season. The uncertainty surrounding his position has prompted speculation about potential successors.

McCarthy Backs Luis Enrique for Old Trafford

McCarthy, who served as an attacking coach at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag between 2022 and 2024, believes Enrique's tactical experience and profile make him the standout option for the role.

"For me, the most deserving manager that I would love to see at Man United is Luis Enrique, but he isn't going to leave PSG," McCarthy told Sporty TV. "I wouldn't do that if I were him. They have the money, but I think you'd be a nutcase if you left what is being built at PSG to come to Man United."

The 48-year-old also questioned who else would realistically be available. "He's a young manager, and even if you go and change now, who are you going to get in his place?" McCarthy added.

McCarthy Urges Club to Back Carrick

Despite naming Enrique as his preferred candidate, McCarthy stopped short of calling for Carrick's dismissal. He pointed to last season's encouraging run under the former England midfielder as reason enough to show patience.

"Michael Carrick has done really well in the back end of last season," McCarthy said. "So support him, back him, give him the trust, give him the support that he needs, and give him the players that he wants to bring in. The players respond to him, and they play well under him."

The former Cape Town City head coach also identified consistency and recruitment as the two areas where improvement is most urgently needed, arguing that addressing both would lay the groundwork for long-term stability at the club.
