Katlego Lehlogonolo "Shebeshxt" Chauke's bail application has taken a dramatic twist after an independent forensic ballistics expert cast serious doubt on the prosecution's version of events, telling the Polokwane Magistrates Court that the evidence on record does not establish that a shooting ever took place.
Jan de Klerk, called as a defence witness on Tuesday, 27 October, delivered testimony that could significantly shift the trajectory of the Lekompo musician's case.
What the expert found
De Klerk was brought to the stand by Shebeshxt's legal team, led by advocate Mutheiwana Sikhwari SC, to scrutinise the available evidence around the alleged shooting that reportedly occurred on 19 October 2025 in Witklip Street, Polokwane.

According to De Klerk, he had not received any corroborating statements that firearms were actually fired at the scene. "No corroborating statements were received highlighting or confirming that any firearms were discharging," he told the court.
He went further, noting that the documentation made available to him was insufficient for an independent reconstruction of events. His assessment of the injuries at the heart of the case was particularly striking.
Injuries cannot be linked to gunshots
The wounds described in the clinical findings had been characterised as "puncture wounds," and De Klerk said that classification alone raised significant problems for the prosecution's narrative. "Based on the clinical findings and the description of the injuries as 'puncture wounds' I cannot, on the information currently provided, scientifically attribute these injuries to gunshot wounds," he stated.
The testimony places considerable pressure on the state's case, as the alleged shooting forms a central part of the charges Shebeshxt is facing. The bail application continues before the Polokwane Magistrates Court, with the outcome set to determine whether the musician remains in custody while the matter unfolds.
