Relebohile Mofokeng Set for House Gift From Orlando Pirates Chairman Irvin Khoza After R200k Bet

Relebohile Mofokeng Set for House Gift From Orlando Pirates Chairman Irvin Khoza After R200k Bet

  • Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza made a R200,000 bet with winger Relebohile Mofokeng ahead of the club's title-winning season
  • The South African international's father, Sechaba, revealed the unusual wager in an interview, explaining what each side stood to gain
  • Khoza's side of the deal hinged on whether the Soweto-based club could end a 14-year wait for a league championship

Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has bought winger Relebohile Mofokeng a house, honouring an extraordinary bet the two made before last season's league campaign.

Mofokeng's father, Sechaba, confirmed the arrangement in an interview with Soccer Laduma, revealing that his son had staked R200,000 on Pirates winning the league title. Under the terms of the agreement, Mofokeng would hand over the R200,000 if the Buccaneers failed to claim the championship. Should Pirates succeed, Khoza would purchase the winger a house of his choosing.

"So they made a bet: if they didn't win the league, he [Mofokeng] would give the Chairman R200,000. He said, if I win the league, the Chairman would buy him any house of his choice," Sechaba said.

Pirates end 14-year title drought

Pirates did lift the trophy last season, ending a 14-year wait for a league championship. Mofokeng, then 22 years old, played an instrumental role in securing the title during his final campaign with the Soweto giants before departing for Belgian club Royal Union Saint-Gilloise in July 2025.

Sechaba confirmed that Khoza held up his end of the bargain without hesitation. "The house is there; he delivered," he said.

Mofokeng's bond with Khoza

Beyond the wager itself, Sechaba spoke about the deep relationship his son developed with the Pirates chairman during his four years at the club. He described Khoza as a formative figure in the young player's personal development.

"He did so much for me in my life, and he taught me a lot about life. I think he deserved to get something back," Sechaba said, relaying his son's sentiments.

Mofokeng departed Pirates after scoring 29 goals in more than 120 appearances and collecting seven trophies during his time at the club. Since moving to Belgium, he has continued to impress in his first four months at Royal Union Saint-Gilloise.
