A KwaZulu-Natal school community is in mourning after losing one of its own. Stanger ML Sultan Secondary School announced the passing of Bonga Mthembu, a Grade 9A learner, in a heartfelt Facebook post shared on 8 October 2026.

The school's management described Bonga as "a young life full of potential." Principal GSF Zondi, together with the School Management Team, School Governing Body, staff and learners, expressed deep condolences to the Mthembu family, his friends, classmates and teachers. His funeral is scheduled for Sunday, 11 October 2026, at 09h00.
In the wake of the loss, the school confirmed that counselling services would be made available to both learners and educators who need help processing the tragedy.
