Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has identified striker Wandile Duba and defender Rushwin Dortley as central figures in his plans for Saturday's Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium.
The match is South African football's biggest fixture, and Chiefs arrive with momentum after a commanding 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup last 16 on Tuesday. Despite the confidence that win has generated, Chiefs enter the derby as underdogs, with Pirates enjoying strong recent form that included qualification for the CAF Champions League group stages. Chiefs, by contrast, narrowly missed out on the Confederation Cup.
Duba's Form and Confidence in Focus
Duba was the standout performer against TS Galaxy, bagging a hat-trick and backing it up with outspoken remarks following the match. After Galaxy posted social media banter ahead of the game, the young striker fired back, saying the club viewed themselves as lions when they were, in fact, donkeys.
Da Cruz welcomed Duba's form while urging the striker to channel it into greater consistency. "I am very happy for Duba. He is a young player who sometimes has ups and downs. I think he just needs to improve his consistency," Da Cruz said.

"He's a young and very good player. He's able to drop deep and make runs into space. He's very good up front, but he must continue working hard and listening to the coaching staff. If he does that, he can become a Bafana Bafana player as well."
Dortley's Return Steadies the Defence
Equally significant was the return of Bafana Bafana international Rushwin Dortley, who had been sidelined through injury for several weeks. His presence helped Chiefs keep a clean sheet against TS Galaxy, a factor that will be critical against Pirates' attack.
"Dortley has very good technical abilities," Da Cruz stated. "He's able to break lines with ease and find players in space. He's strong in the air and wins his duels."
Da Cruz admitted that patience had been required before reintroducing Dortley to the starting line-up. "We needed him for a long time, but due to his injury, we had to be patient with his return. For a few weeks, I hesitated to start him, especially for the CAF games. But based on what we saw from him in training leading up to this match, we decided it was the right time to put him in."
The coach expressed satisfaction with how Dortley handled his return. "I am very happy for Dortley; he was out for a long time. You could see it was an emotional game for him, and I am delighted with his performance."
Saturday's Soweto derby will also mark Da Cruz's first as Kaizer Chiefs head coach, adding an extra layer of significance to the fixture.
