"Keep Pushing": Matric Learner Living in Shack Makes Progress After Cash Gift from Man

  • Jaydon, a matric learner from Kimberley, shared a vlog of his solo mission to collect his report and submit a university application
  • The young man, who has social anxiety and no parents to help him, pushed through fear and confusion to try to secure a place to study after matric
  • South Africans rallied behind Jaydon, with one stranger sending him R3,000 after his very first TikTok video

A matric learner going by @jayyy2crazyyy on TikTok has captured the hearts of thousands of South Africans with a raw, vlog-style video documenting his attempt to navigate the university application process entirely on his own. Jaydon posted the video on 28 October, and it quickly gained traction, with viewers moved by his honesty and determination.

In the video, Jaydon walked through a day that took him from his bedroom to city streets, a school, a university campus, a library and a McDonald's. He was trying to collect his school report and submit his university application, but hit obstacle after obstacle. He got lost on campus, felt too anxious to speak to staff, and discovered that a section of the application required a parent's signature, something he simply could not provide.

Jaydon was open about the fact that he has social anxiety. At one point during the visit, he stood up and left the queue, then came back again to try once more. He eventually learned that the application could be completed online, but when he tried that route at the library, it did not work out either. Despite setbacks, Jaydon refused to give up:

"I'm not losing hope, guys. I'm still gonna push so I can have a place to stay after matric."

He also shared a deeply personal moment from the day. McDonald's had always been a place he associated with his mother, who would take him there when he was younger. Going back alone, he said, felt completely different. His growing online community has also played a big role in keeping him motivated. He said:

"If you guys didn't push me and give me the support to be able to go out and do this type of stuff, I would have still been at home doing nothing, waiting for someone to save me."

Jaydon took a moment in the video to acknowledge a stranger who had made a real difference. After his very first TikTok video, a user named Mac Mac Mercenaries sent him R3,000 to help him out. Jaydon described the gesture as extraordinary, noting that the account had no videos and felt almost ghost-like, yet the person behind it was genuinely kind and even offered further support. South Africans in the comments flooded the post with encouragement:
