"So Proud": South African Steel and Skills Behind Dubai's Iconic Burj Al Arab Hotel

  • The tonnes of steel used in the Burj Al Arab were fabricated by South African company Genrec in Johannesburg
  • Murray and Roberts, another South African firm, formed part of the construction team that built the legendary Dubai hotel
  • South Africans online were stunned to learn how much their country contributed to one of the world's most famous buildings

South Africa had a hand in building one of the world's most recognisable luxury hotels. Johannesburg-based steel fabricator Genrec produced around 9,000 to 10,000 tonnes of steel for the Burj Al Arab's structural frame, which was then shipped to Dubai for construction.

The American Institute of Steel Construction independently confirms Murray and Roberts' involvement in the superstructure team, listing Genrec as the steel fabricator on the project record.
