The University of Limpopo held a solemn candlelight memorial service for Petra Mathaba Tsebe, a 22-year-old fourth-year medical student whose death has devastated the campus community.
Tsebe, who was studying towards a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree through the Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Medicine, also served as chairperson of the University of Limpopo African Medical Students (ULAMS). Her body was found near the university's campus fence in Mankweng on Sunday, 4 October 2026. Police opened an inquest after her identity document and NSFAS card were recovered at the scene.
A video from the memorial, posted on TikTok on 8 October 2026, captured the weight of grief on campus. Students stood in formation wearing white lab coats, a large screen displayed tribute images, and a banner reading 'In Loving Memory of Ms M. Tsebe' anchored the ceremony. Attendees held lit candles as the service unfolded.
Campus mourns a bright future cut short
The University of Limpopo confirmed Tsebe's identity in a bereavement notice, extending condolences to her family, friends, classmates and the broader university community. The notice also confirmed funeral arrangements: Tsebe was laid to rest on Saturday, 10 October 2026, at Ga-Thoka, with the service beginning at 07:00 next to Klaas Mothapo Secondary School. Investigations into the circumstances of her death remain ongoing, with no official cause beyond an "unnatural death" having been publicly established.
