While their bond has stood the test of time, the Mentors admit their first year of marriage was far from easy. “We are over-communicators,” Terence explained, crediting their open and honest conversations as a key factor in making their relationship work.

He added that while he initially felt he wasn’t ready for marriage, he knew he wanted Julie in his life.

Julie shared that her family embraced Terence from the start, despite the racial differences.

“They were very accepting of my husband, even though he is Black,” she said.

Raising their three sons, one adopted Black child and two biological boys, has been a journey rooted in diversity and understanding. The couple openly discusses race at home, ensuring their children grow up aware and empathetic. “

Talking about race has made space for us to have these difficult conversations,” Terence noted.

The Mentors describe their home as “mutual cultural,” blending traditions and perspectives from both sides. They shared that due to their massive online presence, they were once contacted to make an advert, where they encountered a lot of hate from the public after it was released. They opened up about how they are seen as weird while walking on the streets because of their different skin colours.

"The only space we have is our church. Where we feel like we belong. Where we are equally comfortable," said Terence.

Julie added that when they go on holiday or to events, they always make sure to double-check their "political beliefs."

Many were touched by the couple's story as it and the video have gained massive traction on YouTube since it was published on 8 August 2025.
