A South African grandmother became an unlikely TikTok star after her granddaughter pulled a ghost filter prank on her. TikToker @neiloe069 shared the clip on 6 October 2026, and it quickly racked up 19.4K likes.

In the video, the gogo was standing in a bedroom, facing away from the camera. When she turned around, she noticed something odd in the reflection on the screen. She moved closer to get a better look.

What she saw was an AI-generated ghost hovering behind her — a grey figure with enormous eyes, long grey hair falling down either side of its face, and a wide, unsettling grin. It was a filter. The gogo had no idea.

Gogo folds her hands and makes her requests

Rather than flee, the grandmother did something that left viewers in tears of laughter. She clasped her hands together in a gesture of prayer or pleading, looked directly at the ghost on screen, and began speaking to it in a South African language. She said:

"I ask for blessings in my life. I ask that the young child gets money and becomes a police officer to work for their grandmother. I ask for those same things. If you're able to give me these things, I won't say anything."

From the doorway, her granddaughter called out to ask what was going on. The gogo turned and told her, in complete seriousness, that what she was seeing was a Tokoloshe. The granddaughter burst out laughing. The gogo did not.

What is the tokoloshe?

The Tokoloshe is a creature deeply embedded in Zulu and Xhosa folklore. In traditional Nguni belief systems, it is understood not as a random monster but as a being that can be summoned by witches or enemies to cause harm, illness, or misfortune. Many South Africans grow up with stories of the Tokoloshe, and the belief remains culturally significant in both rural and urban communities today.
