Thousands of South Africans living in the United Kingdom as citizens, permanent residents, or holders of settled status are being urged to understand the rigid requirements of the Adult Dependent Relative visa before attempting to bring ageing or unwell family members from home.

British immigration authorities have clarified the rules governing this visa category, and the picture is a demanding one for South African families hoping to reunite with vulnerable loved ones.

Who qualifies as a dependent relative

The visa covers only four family relationships: parents, grandparents, adult children, and adult siblings. Extended family members, including aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws, are completely excluded regardless of their medical condition or level of need.

Beyond the family connection, an applicant must prove they require long-term, daily personal assistance due to old age, physical disability, or a serious chronic illness. Crucially, they must also demonstrate that this level of care is either unavailable or genuinely unaffordable in South Africa, even if the UK-based sponsor offers to fund local nursing care, private healthcare, or domestic caregivers. Given South Africa's established private healthcare sector, satisfying this requirement is considered one of the most difficult aspects of the application.

What sponsors in the UK must prove

The sponsoring family member in Britain must show they have enough room and money to support the arriving relative for up to five years, without drawing on any British state benefits or public funds.

The length of a relative's permitted stay depends on the sponsor's immigration status. Relatives sponsored by British or Irish citizens, or those with settled status, receive open-ended permission to remain, with no need to renew their leave or meet English language requirements.

Processing times for applications submitted from outside the UK currently run at around 12 weeks. Given the strict criteria and high rejection rate, immigration experts advise South African expats to carefully assess whether sponsorship is viable before proceeding, or to explore professional private care arrangements in South Africa as a practical alternative.
