Kaizer Chiefs Told What They Must Do to Compete With Orlando Pirates and Sundowns for Silverware

  • Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande has spoken candidly about the club's struggle to keep pace with title rivals
  • Chiefs sit fifth in the Betway Premiership standings, already nine points adrift of log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns
  • A football analyst has weighed in on Katsande's assessment, pointing to a deeper issue within the club's structure

Former Kaizer Chiefs stalwart Willard Katsande has broken his silence on what he believes the Soweto giants must do to return to winning ways, pointing to a lack of consistency as the club's biggest obstacle.

Chiefs have endured a sluggish start to the Betway Premiership season, collecting 14 points from eight matches to sit fifth on the standings. The gap to league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns has already stretched to nine points, raising concerns among supporters about the club's title credentials.

Katsande, who built his reputation at Naturena as a combative and dependable midfielder, told KickOff that the current squad needs to embrace the weight of the badge they wear.

"For me I just feel like they just need to have consistency. When you want to compete with the big boys and you want to be part and parcel of that top three we were last season, we need to be consistent," he said.

The former hard-tackler, affectionately known as "Salt and Pepper" during his playing days, stressed that the culture of the club demands results regardless of circumstances. "Every game we need to be competent, you know the culture of Kaizer Chiefs, you just need to win, no matter you are having a bad day at the office but you need to win."

Katsande also directed his message at the coaching staff, urging them to recognise the hunger among the fanbase. "For people to fall in love with Chiefs is about winning and winning trophies, so those guys need to know where they are, the coach also needs to know that the people are thirsty to win silverware and bring back the club where it is supposed to be."

He reinforced his call, adding: "look, you are Kaizer Chiefs my friend," as a reminder of the standards the institution demands week in and week out.

Football analyst Uche Anuma agreed with much of what Katsande had to say but raised a structural concern of his own. "I agree with most points raised by Katsande, especially the consistency part, but changing coaches every time is not good for a team consistency though Fernando da Cruz deserve to go," he said.

Anuma also tempered expectations for the remainder of the season. "It would difficult for Kaizer Chiefs to win trophies this season if they keep on showing off poor performance especially against top sides," he added.
