SOUTH AFRICA — Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) leader Cornè Mulder has revealed that a secret meeting was held in Fourways, Johannesburg, on 6 October 2026 to explore the creation of a new Afrikaans political party ahead of the 2029 national elections.

According to NewsDay, Mulder made the disclosure during an appearance on KykNet's political discussion programme In Gesprek, where he faced pointed questions from Professor Koos Malan about the party's ideological direction.

FF Plus accused of abandoning Afrikaner focus

Malan put to Mulder that the FF Plus had steadily repositioned itself as a mainstream opposition party, placing coalition governance above its original commitment to Afrikaans and Afrikaner community interests. He drew comparisons to the trajectory of the former National Party under FW de Klerk, Roelf Meyer and Marthinus van Schalkwyk — a party widely seen as having diluted its founding base in pursuit of broader relevance.

Mulder pushed back firmly, insisting the FF Plus had not abandoned its founding principles. He argued that the party's expanding support base reflected shared values rather than a shift in identity, citing commitments to limited government, private property rights, decentralisation, self-determination, minority rights and merit-based governance as its enduring pillars. He also dismissed the comparison to the National Party as misguided.

Secret meeting and warning of a "fatal mistake"

During the exchange, Mulder confirmed that individuals had gathered in Fourways on the same day as the broadcast to discuss establishing a new political party aimed at representing Afrikaner interests. He declined to name those involved but acknowledged the proposed party could contest the 2029 elections and potentially draw votes away from the FF Plus.

Mulder made clear his opposition to the idea.

"I think it's a fatal mistake," he said.

He argued that fragmenting opposition support would only benefit the African National Congress by reducing the collective weight of parties attempting to unseat it.

Malan said he had no prior knowledge of the Fourways gathering.

"I don't know about the meeting. You tell us about the meeting. You clearly know more about it," he told Mulder during the broadcast.

The exchange laid bare a deeper tension within Afrikaner political circles over whether the FF Plus remains the authentic vehicle for minority interests or whether conditions are ripe for a new challenger ahead of the next national vote.

Briefly News also reported that Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) leader Dr Cornè Mulder has described protests targeting undocumented foreign nationals as understandable, wading into one of South Africa's most contested political issues ahead of the local government elections. Mulder made the remarks on 21 October 2026 while addressing party members during a campaign tour stop in Durbanville, Cape Town. The issue of undocumented migrants has been a contentious issue in the country, with tensions boiling over on several occasions.
